SCHMIDT SENT TO WINNIPEG

The Winnipeg Jets acquired defenseman Nate Schmidt from the Vancouver Canucks for a third-round draft pick in 2022.

What does it give the Winnipeg Jets
Veteran Schmidt plays right defense even though he is a left-shooting rearguard. Therefore, expect him to line up next to Josh Morrissey on Winnipeg's top pairing in 2021-22. Schmidt will replace Tucker Poolman, a pending UFA, in that role.

What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks were expected to trade Schmidt, so this deal does not come as much as a surprise. Vancouver got back a third-rounder for him, which is decent value. The Canucks will still need to address their right defense situation in free agency.

Fantasy impact
Schmidt was a fantasy boon in Vegas a few years ago, but he fell off a cliff last season in Vancouver. He may bounce back in 2021-22 and may be worth a look in very deep formats.
