CAROLINA, DETROIT DEAL GOALTENDERS

The Detroit Red Wings acquired goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic from the Carolina Hurricanes for goaltender Jonathan Bernier and a third-round draft pick in 2021.

What does it give the Detroit Red Wings
This is a very interesting trade involving two un-signed goaltenders and a draft pick. The Red Wings are counting on Nedeljkovic to be their starting goalkeeper throughout their rebuild. He is currently a restricted free agent, but obviously Detroit GM Steve Yzerman has big plans for him. Nedeljkovic is 25 years old, so this trade is for the long term.

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes were not interested in keeping Nedeljkovic around, despite finishing 2020-21 as their No. 1 netminder. Negotiations may have been contentious, so they moved him for Bernier (currently a UFA) and a third-rounder. Expect Carolina to re-sign Bernier quickly, and he will likely form a tandem with someone else in goal for the 'Canes.

Fantasy impact
Nedeljkovic goes from a Stanley Cup contender to a rebuilding team, so his value takes a dip here. Bernier's value may skyrocket if he re-signs with Carolina. However, he will probably be in a time share (which may somewhat limit his overall value).
